How this typing test works
Choose a test above and start typing: the clock starts with your first key. Type the words on the board, pressing Space after each one. Made a mistake? Press Backspace to fix it, or carry on. Press Tab at any time for new words.
How the scores are worked out
- WPM (words a minute)
- Characters of the words you typed correctly, plus one space after each, divided by 5, for each minute. Every 5 characters count as one word.
- Accuracy
- Key presses that were the right key at that moment, out of all key presses. A mistake you fix with Backspace still counts as a mistake.
- Raw speed
- Every character you typed, right or wrong, plus spaces, divided by 5, for each minute.
- Consistency
- How steady your speed was from one second to the next. 100% means perfectly even.
- Belt
- Your WPM earns a karate belt in this game: white, then yellow from 20 WPM, orange from 30, green from 40, blue from 50, purple from 60, brown from 75 and black from 90.
How to type faster
- Rest your fingers on the home row: A S D F for the left hand and J K L ; for the right. The bumps on F and J let you find them without looking.
- Use the same finger for the same key every time. The finger guide shows which finger presses which key.
- Look at the screen, not your hands. It feels slow at first, and that is normal.
- Aim for accuracy first. Speed follows; mistakes only slow you down.
- Practise a little every day. Learn to type takes you there one key at a time.
